Groceries are Tax-Free in Illinois for a Year!

Now through June 30th, 2023.

To help residents with rising inflation costs, Illinois suspended the 1% grocery tax through June 30th, 2023. This will help put a little extra money in your pocket or extra food in your pantry.

Some items that qualify for tax exemption include:

  • Milk and milk substitutes
  • Whole bean coffee
  • Loose leaf or bagged tea
  • Flour
  • Infant formula
  • Beverage powders or dry mixes
  • Unheated pre-cooked meals
  • Concentrates (such as frozen concentrate lemonade, etc.)

A few consumable items that will be excluded:

  • Candy
  • Soft drinks
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Cannabis-infused items
  • Food purchased for immediate consumption
